Hi Jon
I was interested to hear your comment about Home Guard being shown as multi-racial, as if the race divide had been overcome in the face of a greater ‘other’ to fear and hate.

I’m reminded of a 1972 issue of the Avengers (issue 113) which featured the public reveal of the Vision and Scarlet Witch’s love affair.

In this story, a hate-group of suicide bombers gathered to murder the Vision in an attempt to keep androids out of society. As in this B5 episode, writer Steve Englehart has said he deliberately wrote the hate group as a multi-ethnic group of both men and women.

I first read this comic when I was 10 years old and it has been the single greatest influence on my moral and ethical education that I can identify.
There is a wonderful scene of Captain America opening a piece of hate-mail, being shocked, then angry and then throws it in the fire, saying “I don’t know about your god, but a god of love is mine!”
That one line, to a 10 yr old in the 70s, has probably influenced my whole outlook on decades of LGBT issues, for example. Two consenting people love each other? 1) It’s great; 2) It’s their business and nobody else’s.
