I have a feeling that shorthand and journaling may come into play at some point in the story. “Chekhov’s writing”?
I honestly can’t remember. I know he’s doing it so he can write without being understood, but that only needs to happen as a story device if he’s going to succeed in saying something important that the Count doesn’t know about. So is it just a character note or an important story point? We’ll have to wait and see if Chekhov shows up. 🙂
