Jon reads Action Comics 262 (1960) and talks about it!

I have to agree with your comment that “Krypton quake” is a strange term. I’d have gone with “ground quake”, if I were writing the story. On the pedantic side, although I grew up in a time when the phrase “Earth’s yellow sun” appeared quite often in Superman/Supergirl stories, but Superman and Supergirl, who have seen the sun from space, outside of our atmosphere, should know that our sun is NOT YELLOW! It’s white. It just LOOKS yellow through our atmosphere. Also, changing gold to lead (or lead to gold, if you’re an alchemist) is, as you point out, an extremely unlikely prospect.
For what it’s worth, yes, I do have a vaccination scar from the polio vaccine injection (I was born in 1956.) and received the sugar cube booster when I was in kindergarten.
Some of the “science” in this story is laughable now (Gold to lead; developing and immunity to radiation by exposure.) but for the target audience in those days, it was fun, and we probably didn’t even “get” that it was wrong. Also, if the metal eaters eat metal, why did Superman seal up the hole in their cage with METAL?
Finally, thanks for your shout out to Otto Binder, who certainly wrote good stories, regardless of scientific accuracy. He definitely deserves to be well-remembered.
