ASMC 031 – Amazing Spider-Man 44 and 45

The Classics gang is heading into the summer with the weightiest question of all Spider-Man history.  Did Gwen and Flash date?  The answer may surprise you, Marvelites!  Join Jon, Josh, and Don as they take a look at Amazing Spider-Man 44 and 45, which also, by random happenstance, also feature the return of Dr. Curt Connors as the Lizard.

We also read your emails this time around.  If you’d like to write in and receive response on the air, you are welcome to send us an email.  You can also share your thoughts in the comment section below.  And we always enjoy receiving reviews on iTunes, which will also receive response on the show.  Thank you so much for listening!

Golden Age Superman

GASup 020 December 1939

Golden Age Superman is back again to finish out not just the year, but the 1930s decade!  AND to complete its celebration of the Ultra Humanite’s farewell to Superman’s comic stories with Action Comics 23.  For this final installment, I have J David Weter of Superman Forever Radio with me, and we talk about Ultra trying out her new life as a woman and what Superman has to do to stop her.  It’s probably the best Ultra-Humanite story we’ve had, just in time for the character to say good-bye.  Then it’s off to the daily and Sunday newspaper strips where war hits Europe and Superman get attacked … by a BEAR??!!

GASup 019 — November 1939

Apologies for the delays, but Golden Age Superman is here once again, and this time I am joined by Superman blogger Stephen Lacey of the World of Superman blog. This week, Superman gets an abusive caregiver arrested for arson and stops some jewel smugglers with the help of Lois Lane in Superman 3.  Then it’s Action Comics 20, the second installment in the final trilogy of the Ultra Humanite, where Ultra does some gender bending and comes out of the story with more estrogen and soft skin than he had last issue.  And in the newspaper dailies, Clark goes to work for the DAILY PLANET!!

GASup 018 — October 1939

This week, on Golden Age Superman, I am joined by good friend Donovan Morgan Grant of Amazing Spider-Man Classics and Clone Saga Chronicles.  Together, we take a look at Action Comics 19, the first of the final three stories to feature the Ultra-Humanite.  The people of Metropolis are dying from the Purple Plague, and only Superman can stop the one responsible.  Then it’s off to the newspaper strips where Superman is victim of female shenanigans on several sides as the royal deathplot continues.

GASup 017 — September 1939

Thank you for downloading and listening to Golden Age Superman.  This week, World War II officially gets underway in Europe, and in Action Comics 18, Superman is confronted with the vile evils of blackmail.  He has to help a senator avoid some nefarious schemes so that he can get re-elected, which you’d hope would turn out to be more exciting than it sounds.  You’d hope.  Next week, though, brings us the first installment of the Ultra-Humanite’s final trilogy of stories in the Golden Age, so come back for that!

GASup 016 — August 1939

This week on Golden Age Superman, it’s bunches of Superman stories in the first episode to have both the monthly and quarterly books in full effect.  In Superman 2, reprinting several stories from the newspapers, the Man of Tomorrow helps a depressed ex boxing champ, “Superman Champions Universal Peace” and kills a WHOLE buncha people along the way, and stops a skyscraper construction project from being sabotaged in “Superman and the Skyscrapers”.  Then in Action Comics 17, the Man of Steel learns that the passenger liners of a shipping line are getting blown up one by one, and you’ll never guess who’s behind it, on his way to world domination.  All this and an announcement of a new show I’m going to be involved in!  Enjoy and tell all your friends!

This is it, folks!  This is the one you’ve been waiting for!  Amazing Spider-Man 42 and 43 bring us the first appearance of Mary Jane Watson, the woman Peter will ask to be his wife in the culmination of all of Aunt May’s machinations.  Along for the ride this time is Brad Douglas, webmaster of the Spider-Man Crawl Space, and it wouldn’t have been the same without him.  Hope you enjoy the show!

GASup 015 — July 1939

School’s been keeping me busy, but in the face of all homework and paper deadlines, I once again have for you an episode of Golden Age Superman!  This week, in Action Comics 16, it’s back to social justice basics for the Man of Steel, as Superman decides to do something about gambling and the numbers racket that is destroying lives and finances in Metropolis.  What?  In where?  That’s right, we finally get a name for the city of Superman’s exploits!  All this, and our first decoding, too!
