ASMC 033 – Amazing Spider-Man 47

Welcome back to Amazing Spider-Man Classics for a truly classic issue of the Stan Lee/John Romita era.  We have Gwen, we have Mary Jane, we have Flash, Harry, and the ESU gang, we have Betty and Ned even though we’re not sure why, and we have Kraven the Hunter, now with 100% more LASER NIPPLES!!!

And! As a special added treat, Josh and Don finally settle the question once and for all of Gwen and Flash and exactly what happened between them.

Joining us once again is Tyler Crone, whom you have have heard on Of Mercs and MutantsFrom Yellow to Red: A Daredevil Podcast, or as the new regular cohost with me and Zach over at Teenage Wasteland: An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast.  As a Deadpool expert, he lets us know some of the retcons that have been made to this issue by the Merc with a Mouth, and you’ll never look at Anna Watson the same way again!

There are some emails read this time around, so if you would like to have your opinion read on the show regarding the books or our comments on them, drop us a line, and we’ll be happy to do it.

April showers bring May flowers, and they also bring conniving female reporters who MUST KNOW SUPERMAN’S REAL IDENTITY!  Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this latest episode covers Action Comics 25, the first time Lois Lane ever sought to find out who Superman really is.  It’s a bit of a romp with Superman being immobilized by hypnotism and then killing lots of people.  In other words, Golden Age Goodness!!  Also, over in the Superman radio show, we have the debut of JIMMY OLSEN!!  So, it’s a big month all around for the world of the man with the S on his chest.  Come check it out!

ASMC 032 – Amazing Spider-Man 46

You’ve waited.  You’ve sweated.  You’ve sued for creator rights and fought over first place in line to see the movie!  Now, here it is, folks!  The next episode of Amazing Spider-Man Classics, yaaaaaayyyy!!!

Today, ladies and gentleman*, we are looking at one episode of Amazing Spider-Man.  We had planned for two, but one took long enough.  And actually, you may see more episodes in the future with only one issue covered.  I’m contemplating the ifs of a format change.

So to join us for this look at Amazing Spider-Man 46 is Tyler Crone, whom you have have heard on Of Mercs and Mutants, From Yellow to Red: A Daredevil Podcast, or as the new regular cohost with me and Zach over at Teenage Wasteland: An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast.  And he helps us to take a look at the first appearance of the Shocker.  It’s full of Silver Spoon goodness and college hijinks galore (but not that kind**).  And, we wrap up with a 1966 YEAR IN REVIEW!!

In the email section, a writer mentions his weekly RPGH podcast, Kicked in the Dicebags, and that he played our promo in one particular episode.  So if RPGs are up your alley, go check out his show.

In the ads, we talk about the ad for the oh-so-NOT-amazing Digi Comp I.  If our descriptions weren’t clear or perked your interest, there are some videos here, and here, that show you what this ELECTRONIC COMPUTER BRAIN is all about lol.  Yeah, essentially it is a mechanical binary counter that runs from 0 to 7 in binary.  Possibly “educational”, and maybe “fun at parties” for like five seconds, but no way it “solves riddles” or “even tells fortunes,” as the ad says.  Yes, it adds.  One at a time.  But no subtraction, multiplication, or memorization.  No clue what those ad writers were smoking (other than the money of underage suckers who read comic books).

There are some emails read this time around, so if you would like to have your opinion read on the show regarding the books or our comments on them, drop us a line, and we’ll be happy to do it.

*No, that’s not a spelling mistake.  It’s supposed to be a joke, a reversal of “lady and gentlemen”, like there’s a bunch of girls listening to this show but only one random guy.  Get it?  (I know how to spell.)

**I was gonna link to some college porn and decided that might be like crying on the spamphone for spammers to come and spam my site with spam, spammingly.

What do you do if your neglect and indulge your son, and he turns out to be a bit of a bum?  Why, call in Superman to straighten him out, of course!  That’s what old Rufus Carnahan does in Action Comics 24, the Superman adventure discussed in this episode of Golden Age Superman.  But will his son Peter be able to elude his gambling debtors?  Also, Superman fights for the slums (again) in the daily newspaper strips and goes off to war (again) in the Sunday strips.  Coverage of the Superman radio show also continues with the dastardly doings of the Yellow Mask!  Check it out!

In the email section, a listener mentions a Superman Homepage article about Superman and phone booths.  That can be found here.

GASup 023 February 1940 B

Luthor is back, for the first time!  In this second half of Golden Age Superman’s coverage of Superman’s adventures in February 1940, Superman 4 takes us on two very different adventures with Luthor.  First we see him challenge Superman to a series of superfeats, and then our jaws hit the floor as he lures Superman to an ancient underground Pacific city to, um, fight dinosaurs.  And a giant rat.  But that’s okay because there are two more stories after that full of Superman goodness, and joining me again on this journey is Superpodcaster Michael Bailey (of Views from the LongboxFrom Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast, and Xavier’s Podcast for Gifted Youngsters).  I hope you enjoy it, and I’ll see you again next week!

GASup 022 February 1940 A

Golden Age Superman is proud to present its first two-part episode!  The second month of 1940 saw more Superman content being published than in any month previous, with Superman 4 (for the first time presenting four all-new stories) and Action Comics 23 both featuring the first adventures of none other than Luthor himself.  Then there are the newspaper daily and Sunday strips, a special comic story published in Look magazine, AND the debut of the Adventures of Superman RADIO show!  Talk about huge.  And, not afraid to take something big and make it bigger, I’ve invited Superman podcaster extraordinaire Michael Bailey (of Views from the Longbox and From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast) to join me in taking a look at everything Superman was up to this month.  To give everything the time it deserves, I’ve split it over two episodes, and this is the first.  Have fun with it!

GASup 021 January 1940

Golden Age Superman is starting out a new year and a new decade. I’m back going solo this week to look at Action Comics 22, where Superman heads off to the war in Europe and runs into beautiful spies, intrigue, and massacre.  Then in the newspaper strips, the stories take a different approach on the war, as Clark Kent takes a job with spies and saboteurs.  Is it possible Clark Kent has turned traitor??
