New 52 28 Supergirl Superman 12 Superman Annual 1

The first year is over.  The New 52 is firmly established and not going anywhere.  And we close this first year with a five-week month, which gives us our first Superman Annual.  Jon and Dave discuss that and the other Superbooks this month, including the following stories:

Supergirl 12 — “Inheritance” — Supergirl learns the truth of the only remaining Kryptonians, preserved in the bottle city of Kandor.  So then why is there a Kryptonian voice calling to her from the bottom of the sea?

Superman 12 — “Home” — The brief Dan Jurgens run comes to a close as Superman is confronted with a dilemma.  When our heroes are kidnapped by bad guys, they’ll do anything to get home.  So why then is it bad for a kidnapped alien to use equal force to get away from its human captors?  This sparks some philosophical discussion and feelings on the run as a whole.

Superman Annual 1 — “Atonement” — Helspont’s back, and you’re gonna get in trouble.  Hey, Clark!  Hey, Clark!  Helspont’s back!  Jon and Dave discuss Scott Lobdell’s treatment of Superman’s next confrontation with the big bad of the Wildstorm universe.

Also, Superboy helps Cassie in her struggle with the silent armor in Teen Titans 12.  And don’t forget the Kiss That Launched A Thousand Blogs in Justice League 12 and its apparent ramifications in Justice League International Annual 1.

The New 52 Adventures of Superman will be having a special “look back” episode in the near future.  What are your thoughts on this first year as a whole?  How do the stories translate from month-to-month reading to whole arcs?  Send us an email with “Look back” in the title, and be a part of the conversation for that special episode!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, “we” being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. David Weter of Superman Forever RadioPADSmash!: An Incredible Hulk Podcast and Green Lantern’s Light.  If you have thoughts on the books we cover or on our comments regarding them, please share them by writing an email or comment below.

New 52 27 Action Comics Superboy 12

The first year of The New 52 approaches its close with these two books from August.  Jon and Dave spend this episode looking at the following stories:

Action Comics 12 — “Return of the Forgotten Superman” — Grant Morrison’s second act finds its end in this extra-long chapter, where Superman makes a huge shift in tone and power set and the identity of the true evil is revealed.  How will it all end?  And who does surgery with their thumbnails anyway?!

Superboy 12 — “Night Games!” — Tom DeFalco is the king of the book now, giving us his first solo chapter with no help from Scott Lobdell.  Where will our favorite Kryptonian clone go now that his driver has changed?  Let’s find out together, shall we?

Also up is Worlds’ Finest 4, with the Supergirl of Earth 2.  Come listen and let us know what you think!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, “we” being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. New 52 26 Supergirl Superman 11

Wrapping up our conclusion of the 11s, Jon and Dave have come to this latest episode to discuss the following stories:

Supergirl 11 — “Outsider” — Supergirl is finally settling into a life, even goes on a first date, when everything is thrown off kilter by an attack from … someone.  But more mysterious than the someone is WHO sent the someone.  But we have our ideas.

Superman 11 — “Combat” — The cover declares that in this issue we’ll see the “secrets of the suit revealed.”  …Yeah, they probably shouldn’t have promised that.  And Jon and Dave have a hard time getting past that disappointment to enjoy this issue, but what secrets DID we learn?

We also discuss the current Justice League and Teen Titans events, including the recent Teen Titans trade collection and the changes that were made for that edition of the story.  Come give a listen!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, “we” being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. New 52 25 Action Comics Superboy 11

After a week off of our weekly releases, we are back to dive into the books that hit in July.  This episode is the first half of those, covering the following stories from Action Comics 11 and Superboy 11.

“Superman’s New Secret Identity” — Well, it’s all in the name, isn’t it?  Clark Kent is dead, and Superman has found a new way to spend his hours out of costume.  Meanwhile, the forgotten Superman returns and is ready to take over the world with the help of a six-year-old in pigtails.  What ever can Superman do to stop him?

“Clothes Encounter” — We learn a bit more about how Superman got all those S-shield T-shirts, or do we?  We look at another of Sholly Fisch’s vignettes that have helped these issues to leave an emotional impact.

“Brothers-in-Harm!” — Kon and Miguel have to take care of the city’s detritus, but what’s Superboy doing with all that cash?  And what will his gay friend do to help him with girl problems?

We also have your latest heroine fix (note the “E”) in Worlds’ Finest 3, so come give a listen!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, “we” being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman and J. GASup 032A November 1940

After an extended gap, the show is back for the first of three episodes to cover the adventures of Superman that were published in November of 1940.  Actually, the first two of those episodes will be Superman, the third will be a recently announced Justice Society of America special.  (Hooray!)

The issue at hand today is Superman 8, but rather than tease the contents, I’m going to leave it to you to listen because there’s a bit of a reveal in the course of the episode that I don’t want to spoil.  Just trust me on this one.  And then come back in a couple weeks or so for more.

Golden Age Superman is a proud member of the Superman Podcast Network.  You are also welcome to check out the other end of the Superman spectrum at The New 52 Adventures of Superman, where Dave Weter and I discuss the latest adventures of the Man of Steel!  If you wish to send feedback, you may do so in the comments below or via email.  You can also subscribe to the show through iTunes, and leave a review if you like to spread the word to others.  Thank you so much for listening!

New 52 24 Superboy Supergirl Superman 10

We are wrapping our review and analysis of the June issues in this episode, which include the following:

Superboy 10 — “The Mysterious Mystery of Mystery Island!” — Superboy and Wonder Girl find themselves on an enigma of an island after their escape from the Culling.  Dodging dinosaurs is easy for Superboy, though, compared to trying to make friends with the girl you tried to kill last week.

Supergirl 10 — “Rescuer” — Trapped in the magical realm of the Black Banshee, Supergirl meets a boy!

Superman 10 — “Secrets & Lies” Part II — Superman’s secret identity has been revealed, endangering a family of innocents, as the Man of Steel learns how to deal with Anguish.

We also continue along The Villain’s Journey in Justice League and see Superboy meet up with the rest of his new team in Teen Titans.  Come give a listen!

New 52 23 Action Comics 10

In this latest installment of The New 52 Adventures of Superman, Dave and Jon take a look at the first chapter of the next phase of Grant Morrison’s Superman epic in the two stories of Action Comics 10:

“Superman: Bulletproof” — The Little Man has sent Nimrod the Hunter after Clark Kent, and Clark knows it.  What is the ultimate solution Clark will find for this problem?  Suicide???

“Absent Friend” — All those who knew Clark Kent gather to mourn his passing.  And Superman can only watch from the sidelines.

We also include Earth 2’s Supergirl in the discussion with Worlds’ Finest 2.  And Superman has a cameo in Stormwatch 10 as the centuries-old watch squad try to decide what to do with the growing super-hero problem.

Superman 9 — “Secrets & Lies” — A man with too much time on his hands is determined to expose Superman’s identity, despite any Anguish that may come along the way.

We also begin our look at “The Villain’s Journey” in Justice League 9.  No Superboy or Teen Titans this week as those were in our Culling coverage last episode.

And… it’s not a pretty sight.  Fair warning.

But come check it out.  Listen to what we have to say, and then write an email telling us how wrong we were!!  Or WERE WE??

New 52 20 Action Comics 9

Hello and welcome once again to The New 52 Adventures of Superman, your source for reviews and analysis of every appearance and adventure of Superman and his family of characters.  This time out, we begin looking at the books from May 2012, which includes the two following stories from Action Comics 9:

“The Curse of Superman” – Superman becomes whatever you want him to be. And now he’s trying to destroy the world, but can he be stopped by the Superman of Earth-23?  And what does Morrison mean when he says this is Superman done right?

“Executive Power” – What conflicts would Superman face if he were president?  When does saving the world fall outside the purview of that office, and will Superman cross that line?

Also, this episode begins coverage of a new side title featuring Supergirl from Earth 2, trapped with Robin on a parallel world and forced to take on the new costumed identities of Power Girl and the Huntress.  We also stop briefly on Earth 2 itself to see the fate of their home and its Superman.  All this and your emails too!
