Golden Age Superman

GASup 031 October 1940

It’s been a while, hasn’t it?  Did you miss me?  Well, summer is here, school’s out, and that means time for more podcasts!  In this episode, I am joined by Charlie Niemeyer once again to look at Action Comics 31.  Someone has put the town of Brentville to sleep, and it’s up to Superman to find out who and how and to put a stop to it!  Jack Burnley brings his beautiful art to the story, and it’s a pretty darn good one.  Then in the daily newspaper strips, Lois has become a pawn of “the Master,” but who is the Master and what is he trying to accomplish by getting Lois Lane fired from the Daily Planet?  Meanwhile, on Sundays, everything comes to a head in the exploration of Lois Lane’s inherited property.  And finally, the Yellow Mask returns to menace the free world on the Superman radio show.  Lots of good stuff is going on, and you’re invited to join in the fun!

Golden Age Superman is a proud member of the Superman Podcast Network.  You are also welcome to check out the other end of the Superman spectrum at The New 52 Adventures of Superman, where Dave Weter and I discuss the latest adventures of the Man of Steel!  If you wish to send feedback, you may do so in the comments below or via email.  You can also subscribe to the show through iTunes, and leave a review if you like to spread the word to others.  Thank you so much for listening!

New 52 14 Superboy Supergirl Superman 6

Welcome back to another fantastic episode of New 52 Superadventures!  In this episode, Dave and Jon wrap their coverage of the 6s with the following books:

Superboy 6 — “Not So Super” — It’s a classic case of Boy meets Girl, Girl doesn’t speak English, Girl finds out Boy is a clone, Girl punches boy into space.  Your traditional not-so-love story, in other words.  Looks like they’re laying seeds for the big Superman books crossover we were promised for this summer.  Wait, isn’t summer here?  WHERE’S OUR CROSSOVER??

Supergirl 6 — “The End of the Beginning” — Supergirl’s opening origin arc is nearing a close as she meets ghosts of her parents and follows Reign back to Earth to stop her from … well, reigning it.  All the pieces are in place for next month’s knock down, drag out brawl.  So long as Reign shuts up long enough for the fight to happen.

Superman 6 — “The Measure of a Superman” — It’s the final chapter of George PĂ©rez’s run on the title as we find out just what’s been going on all this time, leaving us secure in the knowldege of … wait, what HAS been happening all this time?

Heckling aside, there was some good stuff this month.  Mostly.  And we also take some time to look at the end of “Origin” in Justice League 6 and the Superman guest spot in Batman: The Dark Knight 6.  All right here, all just for you!

Thanks so much for listening. We do hope you enjoy the show, “we” being Jon M. Wilson from Golden Age Superman, J. David Weter of PADSmash!: An Incredible Hulk Podcast and Green Lantern’s Light, as well as Michael Kaiser from the newly revived Legends of the Batman.  If you have thoughts on the books we cover or on our comments regarding them, please share them by writing an email or comment below.

12 Action Comics 6

We’re back for another month of Superman adventures in DC Comics — The New 52!  We’re starting with an issue that has possibly gotten the most mixed reviews yet of Morrison’s Action Comics.  And since Action Comics 6 features the Legion of Super-Heroes, we have welcomed along for the ride Paul French of the Legion of Substitute Podcasters!  He sheds some light on the Legion aspects of the issue and helps us dissect the five-dimensional epic.  So come check it out!

New 52 11 Superman 5

That’s right.  You get three episodes to wrap up this month’s New 52 Superawesomness, as Jon, Dave, and Mike (or is that Mike, Dave, and Jon?) tackle the final week of the month with:

Superman 5 — “Menace!” — It looks like Superman done flipped his top now, don’t it?  What havoc will the Man of Steel wreak before he can be stopped?  And more importantly, can sound travel in space?!

We also take a look at the penultimate chapter of the new Justice Leage origin and the grand showdown between Superboy and the Teen Titans.  Oh, yeah, and Superman also kills Batman in Batman: The Dark Knight.  All the 5s get wrapped up on this episode, so come check it out!

New 52 10 Superboy Supergirl 5

For the second of three episodes this month, Jon, Dave, and Mike are going to be looking at the fifth issue of each Superteen title.

Superboy 5 — “Breakout” — Before heading out to beat on Wonder Girl, Superboy wants to save Caitlin Fairchild.  But why?  What’s his motivation?  Can we figure out what Lobdell is trying to say?

Supergirl 5 — “Homecoming” — Kara goes home and finds nothing but death and destruction.  And a big ugly who beats on her.  What happened to them?  What does it all mean?  And who shot Zor-El?

The length of the discussion for the non-Action titles this month was lengthy enough that Jon felt a cut was in order.  The episodes are left a touch on the short side compared to usual, but that’s better than super-long for some people, so here it is.  Look for the rest in a week.

New 52 09 Action Comics 5

It begins — again!  The New 52 Adventures gang is here to discuss the new origin of Superman as presented in Action Comics 5, and this time they bring a friend along in the person of Michael Bailey of From Crisis to Crisis: A Superman Podcast, Tales of the Justice Society of America, and Radio KAL Live!, as well as staff writer at the Superman Homepage!

“Rocket Song” — It may be the seventeenth origin that Superman has gotten in the last year and a half (or something like that), but we loved it anyway.  The question is, why did it have to happen smack in the middle of another story?  We have the hash and dash on all that as well as some comparisons with previous versions of the.

“Baby Steps” — Wow, did this story catch us all by surprise, and it gives a chance for four men to share their feelings.  But don’t let that frighten you!

You’ll also get Michael Bailey’s opinions on the New 52 relaunch as a whole and the other Superman books in particular, with some solid appreciation of Serinda Swan mixed in for good measure.  Come give it a listen!

GASup 030B September 1940

Welcome back to the goldenest Superman podcast ever produced, Golden Age Superman.  Here in episode 30B, I’ll discuss Action Comics 30 with the help of Charlie Niemeyer, as we see golden globes of doom being used to destroy people, leaving behind nothing but a shadow imprint on the ground.  It’s creepy gruesome stuff, and it makes for some fun Superman goodness.  Then, over in the newspaper strips, a hooded saboteur starts sabotaging the water and power of Metropolis, and Lois Lane gets closer to the land she inherited from Bill Bixby.  And on the radio show, Superman finally reveals his existence to one lucky boy.  All this and your emails and iTunes reviews.  Come check it out!
